Adventure for everyone

Your next adventure isn't six flight hours away — it's right outside your door. Ride however you want: fast, slow, alone, or with a friend.

You don't need to be beyond civilisation to feel like you're in the middle of nowhere. At Hamburg's Backyard you're far enough from everything to be alone with yourself, your thoughts, and your friends.

Unsupported.
But never alone.

Unsupported. But never alone.

No feed stations. No technical support. No individual assistance. You take care of yourself from start to finish.

But: mutual help between participants is allowed and encouraged. That's not a bug in the system — it's part of the culture.

"Unsupported doesn't mean alone."
03

Beginner- friendly?

The term refers to logistics, not difficulty. Start and finish in Hamburg, easy travel, never far from civilisation. Moderate distance and elevation compared to other ultras.

But: the course is demanding. You need training, experience with long distances, and solid preparation.

"Accessible — but not easy."

More questions

Yes, four days for the Ultra. No stage time limits. Plan your own pace and enjoy the ride. The Night Shift has no official time limit — you ride through the night and arrive back in the morning.
Gravel bike or mountain bike, minimum tyre width 40 mm for sand and forest tracks. A road bike is technically possible but not recommended.
There is a fixed GPX route. You follow the track. If the path is blocked, you may briefly leave it — but return as quickly as possible. The same applies for food or rest stops: leave the route, then return to the same point.
That's fine — as long as you return to the exact point where you left it. Whether it's a blocked path, a food stop, rest, or accommodation: leave the route, sort it out, come back to the same spot. Don't skip sections of the route.
One week before the start. You'll receive the final GPX file and the Roadbook then. A preliminary version of the route is available on Komoot beforehand.
Be self-sufficient. Carry your tools and know your bike. There are bike shops along the route. Find your own way out of the situation — you're never alone, but the race is unsupported.
No — book only after you've started. Sounds odd, but it gives you maximum flexibility. You don't want to feel tied to bookings while you're out there.
No luggage transport along the route. Start and finish are at the same location, so you can leave a bag there — we'll have a luggage drop at the start/finish. Everything you need on the road, you carry yourself.
It's not a big deal. An ultra pushes you to and beyond your limits — it's ok to stop at any time. Just let us know via WhatsApp or phone. The nearest train station is never far, and you'll be back in Hamburg within a few hours.
Call 112 immediately. Mobile coverage in Germany is good, help is never far away. Always carry your phone and basic first aid supplies.
We recommend it, especially if you're coming from outside Germany. The route stays within Germany, but unexpected situations — injury, illness, emergency transport — can be expensive without cover.
No health certificate required. But you should be fit for the distance — this isn't a casual ride. Train for it, know your limits, and listen to your body.
Rain is part of it. In extreme conditions (storms) we will inform you in advance and decide on the ground.
Correct. Wednesday 24 June is the official arrival day with the Ultra Riders' Briefing in the evening. The race itself starts Thursday morning. Sunday 28 June is the latest finish date for the Ultra. So: arrival and briefing, race, finish — five days in total.
No, the Night Shift riders' briefing takes place separately on Friday afternoon. You're very welcome to join the Ultra's Wednesday get-together though.
No. Be sure you're going to ride before you book.
